Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairytale
Some love stories are written against the grandest backdrops. This one is a testament to a love that has faced extraordinary challenges and emerged stronger than ever. For their wedding day, this incredible couple from Ukraine chose a secluded and breathtaking location high in the hills of Madeira, with panoramic views of both the majestic mountains and the endless sea. Every detail was a reflection of their journey: elegant white florals, a powerful embroidered tradition, and a serene and quiet beauty that speaks for itself.
Finding a Place of Peace and Intimacy
When this couple first reached out to us, their story was deeply moving. Living and working in the UK, they had endured unimaginable hardship due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Family members had passed away, friends were in danger, and a large wedding was simply not a possibility. But their love for each other was so profound that they still yearned to be married. They chose Madeira as their place of escape and healing, and trusted us to help them create an elopement that was just for them.
The desire for privacy was paramount. Knowing that Madeira is a popular tourist destination, we were very careful to select a unique, high-up location with both mountain and sea views, far away from the crowds. This unique spot required a little bit of a walk, but it was worth it for the quiet intimacy it provided.
When Plans Change, We Adapt
As with any wedding, there are sometimes unexpected challenges. We had planned for a lightweight arch to be used for the ceremony, but the potential for wind in this beautiful, exposed location was high. My partner, Verena, our in-house florist with over 30 years of experience, immediately assessed the situation. With her deep expertise, she was able to make some quick adjustments, transforming the single arch into two beautiful floral pillars that stood strong against the mountain breeze. It was a flawless pivot that turned a potential problem into a unique design element, and a perfect example of the value of our in-house team. I even had the honor of carrying the arch up the hill myself, which was a higher and more difficult climb than I anticipated!
A Team of Wonderful People
At Madeira Weddings, we pride ourselves on working with a team of “wonderful people.” It’s our main criteria. Every single person, from the hair and makeup artist to the photographer and videographer, must be not only good at what they do but also have a high sense of empathy and respect for the couple and the sanctity of marriage.
Hair & Makeup: The bride’s hair and makeup was done by Mary Cafora, a well-renowned bridal specialist in Madeira. Mary goes above and beyond to ensure every aspect is perfect, carefully selecting the right shades and styles to enhance the bride’s natural beauty and make her feel confident and radiant.
Photography: The moments were beautifully captured by the exceptionally talented Miguel Nobrega from A Dream Story. Miguel is an absolutely wonderful photographer with over 30 years of experience. He looks so young that it’s a running joke in our circles! He takes great care of the couple, getting them to relax and even convincing them to take stunning photos in unique locations—like standing on a high cliffside—to get the perfect shot.
Videography: Filip from Mikula Productions was on hand to capture the moments on film. I was with the groom while Verena was with the bride, and we talked him down from his nerves, helping him relax a little before the ceremony. He wasn’t nervous in a bad way—he was simply overjoyed and excited to marry his beautiful bride.
The Power of Unspoken Vows
Even though we didn’t understand a single word of the vows they exchanged, the moment was absolutely heartwarming and deeply moving. You could hear the raw emotion and love behind their words, and it was a powerful reminder that love is a universal language that transcends all barriers.
This love story is an inspiration, and we were truly honored to be a part of their day.
